    The North

Within the Northern vicinity of the city the wealthy gather behind meticulously trimmed hedges and high class victorian architecture. The streets are paved with stone, the buildings are made of brick, and the storefronts are brightly lit and inviting. In the North every establishment is made to cater to the rich and the wealthy. Many such places are used to the sometimes peculiar requests of the otherworldly but here there is little that money cannot buy - weather it be illegal or merely looking the other way. Vampires and Dark Hunters are often found upon these Northern streets, their long lives often contributing to their sizable wealth which allow them the luxuries that the North provides.

It's not the long walk home that will change this heart, but the welcome I receive after the restart.

Despite his undead status, the vampire still had some semblance of humanly urges.

Moments driven by desire and a primal hunger for the opposite sex. He hadn't felt an urge quite like the one that drew him so strongly to Miya, in some time.

The vampire, though charming and handsome, had not been on a proper date in some time. Occasionally his publicist would make him court an equally rich young woman in town just for the photo opportunities and columns that came in the gossip pages. But the night would routinely end with him taking her home, perhaps with a cold kiss on her cheek. There had been Sorcha, a pretty young woman he'd asked out in earnest effort. But per usual, his interest waned and he hadn't seen the curious witch in many months. It had been so long since Dareios had been peculiar enough about a person to want to date them. This was strange on many fronts. The first being that Dareios, by nature, was a social creature. He was incredibly loyal to the allies in his keep, and was naturally quite good at making friends. It was in some ways, a bit of a sport for him. It was an unquenchable curiosity. After the hundreds of years he'd spent on this earth, it was perhaps the one thing that he seemingly could not predict. People were so vastly different from one another. While traits and tastes can be similar sometimes, history and culture and connection were wildly individual. Dareios found how it all mixed together to be fascinating.

Nevertheless, the vampire was rather adept at walling himself off to others. He was polite and charming, so it was easy to play the part of a good listener and divert these friends from asking too many questions about himself. He had loved before. But Aisling was a long time ago. The experience was too, well, intense and messy, and had some lingering consequences that still kept Dareios up at night (so to speak). So he never sought out that kind of deep, emotional connection again. He hasn't seen Aisling since -- Jesus, the start of the first World War. It was a tumultuous time, of course, but their split was intentional. He was a vampire living among humans at a time where his kind were nothing more than childish folk lore. The supernatural community back then barely existed in developed countries, where mass hysteria over something so foreign could evoke irreputable consequences. Dareios had loved her. Whatever void was left behind in his chilling, undead carcass longed for her, even now, a century later. She was dead, he knew, her remains having returned to the earth from which she came long ago. For some time he cursed himself for not turning her. But he also knew she was never meant to carry this burden. She wasn't meant for this life. Aisling had been better. Pure.

Despite his hard-in-place discipline over his more predatory instincts, Dareios, too, could not trust himself without a doubt that he wouldn't hurt someone else again one day. He had hurt many, and for many years, before he was able to refine himself to the version most see today. It was a constant struggle, one he would forever be embattled with. Be it human or fae or whatever else, there was always risk, especially when both sides of the equation let their guards down. So even when these urges prickled at the hairs that stood straight on his arms and the back of his neck, that made him want to undress her and drink her blood at the same time, stiffly he sat, swallowing hard, as he kept what he wanted to do firmly under wraps while what he knew he should do was all that he displayed. Miya is going on about blood and how it makes her queasy and he turns away sharply again, feeling as if he's almost losing his grip. He couldn't be more attracted to her than he was in this moment. She reminded him of Aisling almost. Too naive for her own good. So ripe for the taking.

But the wine helped temper these things.

He felt the buzz coming on and welcomed it eagerly. He needed some kind of release, even if it this wasn't what his body had in mind. "I imagine there aren't many vampires you meet that are surgeons." He says in a humorous way, but in a subtly dark way. Then he brings his glass to his lips again. The barmaid appears after some time, noticing how quickly Dareios is guzzling down the bottle of wine and offers to bring another. The vampire nods his head quickly in a strict confirmatory manner. Just as she turns to leave Miya asks him a very poignant question, and he tries hard to find the proper way to answer it. "Oh I'm fine. I'm sorry if I seem a bit on edge. It's not very often that I get a night to myself." He confesses honestly. "It's nice though. I appreciate your company." He was being honest, even if it was proving to be physically hard for him to sit quietly next to her.

As the barmaid returns to uncork the second bottle, the vampire motions for her to fill Miya's new glass. "I hope you'll like it." He offers, gripping the stem of the tall glass and sliding it toward her. He waits patiently for her to take a sip, feeling the salivating need at the back of his mouth again as her delicate lips pursed at the edge of the red liquid. "So what are you doing all alone tonight? I'm sure you have better things to do than to keep me company at this lonely bar." He says quickly, in an effort to keep his cool.
