He didn't want to burden Adelaide with his problems. That was the last thing he wanted. She was so free and spirited. She was meant for great things. He would only hold her up. That's what he kept telling himself. She deserved so much in life and he wanted to help her experience it all. He wanted to be there to show her the Grand Canyon and how it feels to hold a fishing rod in her hand and to take her river rafting. Everything he could think of that she couldn't do or see in Paris, he wanted her to do and see it all. Only if she wanted to, of course. He had never felt so drawn to someone before. It was so easy with her. Even with Becca, he had to make an effort sometimes but with Adeliade, it was the only place he wanted to be. She brought to life a whole new world. He felt honored to be in her company, like he was chosen or something. It was a new kind of high. They both had their dark pasts and they related through it, which was new for him. He didn't want anyone's pity so usually he would hide that part of himself but with her, he wanted to share it because he knew she wouldn't pity him. She would empathize with him because she knew exactly how it felt to be hurt.

He dreaded the day that her father might come back into the picture cause he couldn't see a situation where he would be happy to meet the man who paraded his daughter around like a horse at auction for the highest bidder. He didn't like how he set her up with suitor after suitor one bit. Maybe that was how they were raised and maybe he felt he was doing something good for her by letting her move up in the world through marriage but he could never see himself forcing his own child to be with someone for money or status. He hated waiting and waiting to be with someone like Adeliade now that he had her in his life was pure torture. He had brought this on himself though when he told her that he wanted to be deserving to be at her side and he meant every word. He didn't want to be seen as the man from the dumps who wanted her for her money or status. He wanted to work his way into a man who she could be proud to have at her side.

It was so hard sometimes to look at her and not touch her. His control was wearing short at times and he didn't know how he kept it together. Tonight was one of those nights when it was holding on by a tiny thread. He knew that one day some man more deserving already than he was might walk into her life and claim her and there would be nothing he could do to stop it. Ultimately it would be her choice and what if she gave up on waiting? What if she found the other man better? Taylor dreaded that day and prayed that it would never come. He worried that she might come to find him some day and tell him how a handsome man flirted with her at the bistro, maybe even bought her lunch and made her day with bright conversation and a charming smile. He knew Adelaide would never fall for another trickster, not after what happened to her. Her trust was not so easily handed out and he felt honored to be one of the few she could say that she trusted. But who's to say a truly good man wouldn't come into her life some day?

She said she would wait for him and he could only hope he kept her interest enough for that to stay. He knew she would never push him, though he caught the teasing looks in her eyes sometimes that dared him to make a move. And she was bold enough to make a move herself sometimes, but he never felt pressured to do more than he always wanted anyway. He longed to touch her and hold her and kiss her till there's no tomorrow. He just didn't want her to feel like he was ever using her or betraying her like what had happened in her past. He wanted her to know how very special she was to him. She was a hard creature to turn away though, not when those fingers of fire trailed across him with that damn sexy look in her eyes. She was a woman on a mission and she wasn't afraid of anything. He could tell she was a woman in charge and it only turned him on more. Tonight, she was definitely the predator and he the prey. The longer this went on, the more he felt himself surrendering to the kill because she was a damn fine predator and he was mesmerized by her.

He teased her about already seeing his upper half and she purred a response about once not being enough. His eyes darkened instantly and he felt his jeans growing ever tighter. He clenched his jaw as he tried to hang on to his control. He smirked. "You keep talking like that and I might not want you to." He murmured back daringly, his gaze never leaving hers. She was so demanding tonight and he was falling for every word. She was seducing him with every breathy word and every and every tender touch. That look in her eyes was entrancing and he couldn't get enough. Her fingers moved to his button again and he groaned softly before he could stop himself, his breathing already kicked up a notch as he reached to halt her hands as they played with the button, his eyes intense now as he searched her expression. She was killing him here. She looked into his eyes before her gaze found his lips and he knew exactly what she was thinking. He licked his own lips as if thinking the same and cleared his throat.

He brought the conversation around to Townsend in a feeble attempt to save himself but she kept the seduction going, saying she was still in his court when it came to Townsend and that he would definitely know how she felt about Taylor by now. He smirked despite himself, his eyes practically glowing as he leaned in to press his forehead to hers gently. "I only hope that you know for certain how I feel about you. That's all I care about." He whispered, closing his eyes for a minute in contentment before he reopened them and smiled at her, pulling back just enough to press an adoring kiss to her nose before he drew back with a soft sigh. Luckily the subject changed and she handed him the bottle, therefore drawing her hands away from his pants. He silently thanked the heavens for distractions, wondering just how strong willed she would be on giving into their mutual attraction tonight. God, he wanted her, but he didn't want to rush anything, especially not with someone as special as she was. He didn't want her to have any doubts about what she meant to him but she was making it damn hard to resist her charms.

He told her that she was the puppeteer and he could see the silent question in her eyes as he pulled away to put the bottle up, but luckily he was able to distract her with his breath in her ear and a squeeze of her hand so she didn't voice her question. He started his tour then, happy to put a little distance between them so they could focus more on conversation and less on each other and the strengthening sexual tension. He finally had a breather to collect himself. He took advantage of it, letting her know that he did know how to cook and it would be greasy southern cooking. She purred about challenging her and he chuckled. "Then you name the day and I'll whip something good up for us." He smiled, his eyes sparkling. Then the tour moved to the bedroom. He expected her to maybe look around and sit on his bed to see how soft it was or something, but never expected her to lay out and make herself at home, looking all delectable and then try to hint at him coming over too. He knew he would be done for if he got into bed with her. They wouldn't be leaving it till the morning then he'd be explaining to Townsend why he was bringing Adelaide home at 7 in the morning.

The thought was almost enough to bring a mischeveous grin to his features but he cleared his throat and brushed away the thoughts instead, watching her with a yearning but determined expression. Determined not to leave this doorway, that is. He knew it wasn't about waiting for marriage or taking virtues or anything like that. With any other woman before he met Adelaide, he wouldn't have hesitated to work his charms and join them in bed. But Adelaide was different. She was important and special and he didn't want to screw anything up when everything was going so well between them. What if she only thought afterwards that he was just charming her like the other guy did to get her to bed? What if she told Townsend and he fired Taylor and told him never to speak to her again? All the worst possible explanations ran through his head and he couldn't take it. Any of those options would crush him. She looked so damn beautiful all cozied up in his bed. It took everything in him not to cross that distance and take her in his arms and never let her go until the morning light found them.

He could see she felt the tension and she was loving every minute of it. The humor played out in her eyes and he scowled thoughtfully as he watched her eyes glitter with amusement. Oh, he was so done for. She was enjoying herself. Every minute of it. She asked so innocently if anything was wrong and he bit his bottom lip for a second as he shook his head, clearing his throat. "Nope, nothing at. This is just a very comfortable....doorway." He ran his hand down the doorway as if to demonstrate it's comfort though he knew she would see right through his excuses. Next thing he knew, she sat up on the bed then left her shoes at the foot of the bed to cross the floor to him. She floated like an angel. He swallowed, his brows rising as she made her way right up to him. He was sure at this point, he was screwed. She was going to work her magic on him and he would surrender his control. His body was already betraying him if the bulge in his jeans was any answer. He was tense, his whole body seeming to throb with longing.

She didn't stop before him as he thought. Instead she pressed herself right up against him, chest to chest. He could feel her through her blouse and he had to bite his lip to stifle a groan as she put one hand to his chest and the other into his jean pocket. Oh, good Lord. His gaze hit the ceiling as he tried to control himself but he could already feel himself growing, aching for her to touch him. He was so weak. She was enjoying herself way too much, purring about him being tense and asking about a drink. He was about to answer when she let her hand trace down his shoulder and arm, even finding his back and he had to close his eyes as he inhaled deeply, already picturing her running those fine nails down his back in ecstacy. Dammit. What if she moved her other hand next? He cleared his throat and stepped back, turning on his heel. "Yeah, a drink sounds great." He said in a husky voice that betrayed his desire as he made his way back to the kitchen. He reached for the bottle with shaking fingers, cursing his weak will power as he poured two glasses of the tequila and turned back to hand her hers.

Only then did he allow his eyes to find hers. "You are something else, Adelaide." He said the words in wonder, his eyes intense and still dark with lust even as he tried to shift himself so it wasn't so obvious in his jeans just how much he wanted to let go and have her for the night. Hell, he wanted her forever. He let his eyes take her in, in all her beauty once more before he turned his glass up, letting the tequila distract him with the comforting burn in his throat as he tried not to think about ripping that beautiful pant suit to threads and having his way with her. He was going to need a lot more of these. He turned back to the bottle, pouring himself another glass. Then he turned back to her and held his hand out toward the couch. "You, uh, want to sit and chat? Need anything to eat? I was actually about to make something quick before you came. Fancy a cheeseburger?" He smirked. He was so lost for words right now. He needed some distractions, some distance, or no way was he going to make it through the night.
