He couldn't dare to imagine being so in love with someone and then watching them fall to pieces right in front of you. He felt for Townsend in those moments when Adelaide confided in him about Townsend's past. He could understand better the Englishman's rocky exterior upon knowing he was once very happy and in love and then he had to watch that love dissipate into nothing because she was taken from him. It was a cruel world and it had made him its victim. He was sure Townsend had plenty of plans for himself and his new bride so to have to watch them all fall away must have been terrible. He couldn't even begin to imagine such a loss. He figured Adelaide must have been close with Townsend's bride as well. Perhaps the three of them were best friends who hung out all the time. Adelaide spoke of Townsend's love with affection so she must have liked her. They must have gossiped together and confided in each other. He bet she was beautiful.

Adelaide would forever be the woman who was stealing his heart and he had no doubt that she would succeed to hold it in its entirety soon enough. He was falling hard and fast and he was utterly terrified because he'd never felt like this before. She was a wildfire unable to be tamed and she was burning him up like a drought dried forest of kindling wood. He wanted to do much more than go to work in her yard every day and catch glimpses of her as she went to work at the bistro every morning. He wanted more than to sit on that couch in the corner and watch her charm all the customers so easily while she worked. He wanted more than these rare moments alone he got her by herself with no distractions. He wanted road trips with just the two of them, showing her how fast the harley could go on a wide stretch of a rural two lane road. He wanted to feed her chocolate covered strawberries in front of a small romantic cafe they'd never been to before. He wanted so many other moments with her. He never wanted to let her go.

He could see all the what-if's playing through her mind as she thought of what it would have been like if they'd grown up together. They would have been trouble; that's for sure. He was sure he would have been in awe of her from the beginning, falling head over heels for the noblewoman he knew was forbidden and yet wanting her anyway because he was stubborn and she was everything he wanted and more. He never did like to be told no. He would have run off and eloped with her anywhere just to see that ring on her finger and know that she was finally his. He would have worked his ass off to make a living for them even if she still had the income from her family. He would have wanted to provide for her. They could travel around until they found a place that made them want to settle down. Maybe they could have had kids by now or still be enjoying the privacy of each other's company. Him and Townsend could be toasting to the good ol' days and laughing it up over a beer or wine or whatever else Townsend drinks. Surely he could even bring Townsend around to dating again just to see him happy.

Of course, that's all if they had grown up together and had that extra time to get to know one another. As it was, Townsend would probably laugh in his face if he brought up dating. He needed to earn Townsend's respect and friendship first. He wouldn't have cared if anyone was chasing him and Adelaide, trying to bring her back to the estate. He would have done anything to keep her beside him if that's what she wanted. He told her that he would follow her anywhere and her face softened before she grew bold and asked if he would follow to the edge of the world. He tilted his head and replied without missing a beat. "To the edge of the world and over, if that's where you wanted to go." He finished his glass again at some point in the conversation though he wasn't sure he should have another. He was already feeling the warm tingling sensation from the tequila and it was seemingly working on Adelaide as well. For not wanting to ruin things, he was surely on his way with that bad decision to drink.

He told her he was eager for the next time he got to see her and she laughed before saying she should stay. He swallowed nervously at the idea of having her in his bed day and night, waking up to her every morning and fixing meals together. It seemed so domestic and yet his heart yearned for it to be true. His eyes glazed over for a minute as he pictured it all in his mind before he reminded himself that reality didn't work like that and they both had things to do. He shook his head slowly, reluctantly even as he smiled softly, reaching up to gently stroke her jaw with his thumb. "As much as I'd enjoy that, Townsend and your loyal customers might miss you too much and that would be selfish of me." He can't help the way his gaze follows her hands as she moves to the buttons of her blazer, undoing one then another, teasing him as she drew the blazer back to show the black blouse she had underneath it. She purred to him that she knew what would be suitable for payment and he chuckled, the sound cut short by another low groan as her breath whispered past his ear.

"I'm sure you do. You always have great ideas." He mumbled back, barely audible in the lust filled craze he was in. He felt drunk even though he knew he hadn't nearly put away enough tequila to feel so mellow. It was her touch, her voice, her longing that broke him down and made him pliable. She found herself in his lap before he even knew what happened, his body responding with feverish demand as her hands started wandering. He felt her fingers brushing his shoulder and chest then down his abdomen. He gasped and shifted, knowing his lower parts were already betraying the way he wanted her. He felt embarassed but of course, she would know to expect it. She knew how he felt about her and she was touching him in all the right ways. His urges were coming to life with a new vengeance, the longer she kept her warm weight on his lap and explored his body. Her lips found his and he returned the kiss without hesitation, making it chaste but passionate as he tried not to pressure her for more.

His own hands moved slowly up her waist and arms, his eyes watching for any signs of hesitation or that she wanted to stop. He would never push anything on her, even if she was the seductress all but demanding it. She gasped and he searcher her features, making sure it was a gasp of pleasure and not because she was having second thoughts. As his hands found her hair, he looked at her almost in question, the look saying "what do you want" as subtle as can be. She answered by pleading his name and it was all he needed. With a groan at the wanting tone in her voice, he pulled her back to his lips, deepening it this time. Her felt her hands working at his abdomen but then the button of his jeans were undone and he smiled on her lips even as his tongue swept across her lips, demanding entrance. He wanted to breathe her in, taste her in every way possible. She moaned and he found his teeth grazing her bottom lip, nipping it before he pulled it into his mouth, sucking on it before he finally pulled back gasping. He was losing himself fast in her.

The next thing he knew, she was asking a question, saying only his name but he saw the rest in her heat filled gaze. The thought struck him as funny, her being the one to ask if he wanted to stop as if she were stealing his virtue. In a way, it was probably true since she'd been working on him since she practically got here but his eyes softened as he took her in. She was all woman in his arms and he never wanted to let her go. Her body was begging to be touched and kissed, every inch of it. And he wanted to be the one to do it. He wanted to worship her the way she deserved. He pulled her close, pressing his forehead to hers as he whispered in a ragged voice, deep with wanting. "I don't want to take advantage of you. I don't want to blame the alcohol or the lonliness of the night. I want to hold you and never let you go. I want this for the long haul. If you believe that, then I will love you like no one else has ever loved you before. But if you have any doubt that what we have doesn't go beyond this.....then I'd rather never have than to have and lose the woman I'm falling madly in love in."

His gaze bore into hers, wanting to know without the shadow of a doubt that if she said yes, that she wanted it all too, that she meant it and wasn't just trying to make him fell better. He didn't just want this night as a memory. He wanted it as the first step into what they'd have forever. He was never the type to be corny or say such mushy things but he was an honest man and he wanted to be honest with her, brutally if need be, more than anything. He would never forgive himself if they slept together and she regretted it. He would rather turn her away right now and keep working on their connection if it meant he could show her that none of it was a mistake or a fluke. Even though his body would hate him, he would endure it just to have the chance to show her that she wasn't just his healing balm for tonight. She was his hidden salvation for the rest of his life. She was his new beginning and he'd be damned if he was going to allow his own raging hormones to fuck it all up. But God, how he wanted her to say yes.
