East

The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

My name is Death and the end is here.
Nothing satisfies me but your soul.

They were dying out. A secret order was fading away in to history much like the ancient empires they had served and protected. The Ashrak were one of the oldest orders of hunters, some considered them the first order and somehow in a span of few months, their numbers were culled in to oblivion. Their extinction loomed over Phaedra like the heavy storm that raged outside. There was more weight on her shoulders now.

From what she had gleaned from the communication, there were other such small cells that were in hiding; handfuls of hunting parties that had been sent out before the attack. No one knew anything, it seemed to her. The vampire that was currently growing cold on the roof had been in a raiding party that had attacked their home base. Any information he had to share had died with him. There were more mysteries, more questions and they weren't finding any answers.

In the years with the Ashrak, she hadn't taken a protégé nor had she desired to. Phaedra was a loner, a shadow not a person. There was no true place for her in the grand scheme of things. She was merely a shadow carrying out a profession that the general population never knew existed. She absently ran her tongue on the inside of her lip and flinched as it grazed the open cut. It would be a day or two before it healed and became just another scar; just another badge of honor in covert war against a faceless foe.

Those strange violet eyes of hers wandered the room, the sea of faces and the noise was comforting. The smell of rich liqueur hung around the bar, it reminded her of some place she had long forgotten about and of a time that was more years ago than she would like to admit. She stretched her shoulders and slipped from her coat. Phaedra looked like some amalgamation of librarian meets dominatrix Barbie. Her long black curls were pulled back in a messy bun. Strands had fallen in to her face from the melee but she hadn't been bothered to sweep them aside. The mix of linen and black leather contrasted hard lines with a delicate and feminine figure. She tugged at the collar of her French cuffed white linen dress shirt to loosen its grip. The black leather vest over-bust corset was worn like armor over it. It was a little surprising that there wasn't any stray spatter to mar it.

He caught her eye as he moved towards the bar. Vampire. There were all types in the bar, she knew what she had walked in to the moment she had opened the door. Phaedra had never been the type to kill indiscriminately. Her kills were planned and executed to protect those that were innocent and naïve. The dead vampire on the roof not only had information but a predilection for little girls as meals. Cull the rot. Everyone had skeletons but there were levels of wrong and those that crossed the line were hunted and removed from society. If he could behave, so could she. After all, she just wanted a drink and if he wished to provide interesting conversation too, she wouldn't say no.

She caught the beer he pushed towards her and she turned to face him. Her violet eyes turned hard as she watched him with mild interest. The look on her face turned more toward assessment. He wasn't young for a vampire but he wasn't as old as some that she had hunted. The mischief in his eyes wasn't missed and it earned him a ghost of a smile as she pushed the glass of Guinness to her lips. The cool brew burned her lip but it didn't stop her from enjoying it. "Maybe I hit him first." She said as her smile grew just a little. In reality, she hadn't. But she had certainly planned on it. "Either way, he won't be striking another woman." She omitted the part that included his death. It's always best not to antagonize the locals.

"talks like this."
