North

It's not the long walk home that will change this heart, but the welcome I receive after the restart.

Ever since he decided to invite Sorcha on a date, a ghost of Dareios' past seemed to haunt his thoughts. He hasn't thought of his former lover, Aisling, for some time. Their story began so long ago, at the start of the first World War, in fact. It was a tumultuous time, of course, but their split had been intentional. He was a vampire living among humans at a time where his kind were nothing more than childish folk lore. The supernatural community back then barely existed in developed countries, where mass hysteria over something so foreign could evoke irreputable consequences. Dareios had loved her. Whatever void was left behind in his chilling, undead carcass longed for her, even now, a century later. She was dead, he knew, her remains having returned to the earth from which she came long ago. For some time he cursed himself for not turning her. But he also knew she was never meant to carry this burden. She wasn't meant for this life. Aisling had been better. Pure.

It had been so long since Dareios had been peculiar enough about a person to want to date them. This was strange on many fronts. The first being that Dareios, by nature, was a social creature. He was incredibly loyal to the allies in his keep, and was naturally quite good at making friends. It was in some ways, a bit of a sport for him. It was an unquenchable curiosity. After the hundreds of years he'd spent on this earth, it was perhaps the one thing that he seemingly could not predict. People were so vastly different from one another. While traits and tastes can be similar sometimes, history and culture and connection were wildly individual. Dareios found how it all mixed together to be fascinating.

Nevertheless, the vampire was rather adept at walling himself off to others. He was polite and charming, so it was easy to play the part of a good listener and divert these friends from asking too many questions about himself. He had loved before. But Aisling was a long time ago. The experience was too, well, intense and messy, and had some lingering consequences that still kept Dareios up at night (so to speak). So he never sought out that kind of deep, emotional connection again. Despite his hard-in-place discipline over his more predatory instincts, Dareios, too, could not trust himself without a doubt that he wouldn't hurt someone else again one day. He had hurt many, and for many years, before he was able to refine himself to the version most see today. It was a constant struggle, one he would forever be embattled with. Be it human or fae or whatever else, there was always risk, especially when both sides of the equation let their guards down.

So why now? And why Sorcha? Dareios appreciated her honesty. There was something comforting about her. He never felt like she was looking for something to gain from him. On the contrary, she was one of very few people in his life as of late that just seemed to enjoy his company, for what it was worth. And even after her sudden absence, he still felt rather fond of her. Especially now, as he watched the sultry witch amble up his dark and damp sidewalk and up the short flight of stairs to the entrance of his brownstone. When she compliments his security detail, the vampire merely rolls his eyes in a playful way, his hip cocked so he could causally lean against the door frame. "At least one of us thinks so." He says playfully. "They are good men. But the lengths required to receive a guest seem woefully unnecessary. Please, come in."

Upon hearing Sorcha's kind and playful compliment about himself, Dareios' gaze falls to the ground and his hands instinctively begin to pull at the ends of his blazer, smoothing the clearly already pressed material. Color would have fled to his cheeks for a flushed appearance, if his blood didn't run so cold. "Why thank you. You are radiant tonight." He says with the gentle nod of his head, leading her through the grand foyer and into a sitting room not far from the front door. "So, I have made dinner reservations for us in town, but I also thought I'd offer to cook for you, if you'd prefer to stay in. I have plenty of wine..."
