She's a pleasant woman and the conversation comes easy. It's been a long time since he's been so comfortable talking to a stranger. He supposed Malia was really the only other person that he had ever talked to where he didn't have to think or struggle. No matter what he said, the conversation just seemed to ebb and flow naturally. Nothing was forced or seemed ingenuine. Talking to Ren was just the same. It came so easy.

When he told her that his favorite part of surfing was the calmness before the wave, she replied with her skepticism that she might be too excited for the next way for it to be calming. People who were new to surfing always felt this way, so he was not at all shocked by her reply. It was a natural feeling. When one is learning to surf, they only want that next wave. They want to try again to feel the way the wind seems to guide them to the shore on the edge of the wave. But experienced surfers seemed to also love the moment in between waves. That calmness and stillness that seemed to bring the clarity before the excitement. Neither was a wrong way to feel. Her feelings were valid.

When he mentioned that he taught lessons now, she seemed pleased and excited. Ashton could not believe she would take another shot at surfing if he was the one to teach her. Such a compliment made him smile and he couldn't help but allow the smile to broaden. "It would be my honor." The only thing he loved more than surfing was teaching others to surf. Just seeing the joy that others felt when they made it up on the board for the first time was intoxicating. It was the only drug Ashton needed.

He picks up his order from the counter and turns. It would be reasonable for them to part ways, two strangers simply getting on with their days. But something stops him and he offers to sit with her an enjoy their breakfasts. She accepts with eagerness and he offers yet another kind smile. He waits for her to slide into the booth before he takes his own seat.

Once he's settled, he takes a sip of his coffee, almost instantly feeling the way the coffee seems to energize him. He places the cup on the table before he pulls out the lemon loaf and pinches off one corner. He easily pops it into his mouth, feeling the way the pop of lemon assaults his taste buds. He chews quietly and swallows before he looks at her. "I think you'll enjoy the bread. It's heavenly." He takes a sip of his coffee to wash it down as his eyes look out the window to see the way the sun is starting to rise above the buildings.
