North

Within the Northern vicinity of the city, the wealthy gather behind meticulously trimmed hedges and high-class architecture. The pristine streets are paved with stone and the storefronts are brightly lit and inviting - for the right clientele. In the North, every establishment is eager to cater to the rich and the wealthy. Many such places are used to the sometimes peculiar requests of the otherworldly but here there is little that money cannot buy - whether it happens to be illegal or merely involves looking the other way. Vampires and Dark Hunters are often found upon these Northern streets, their long lives often contributing to their sizable wealth which allows them the luxuries that the North provides.

Time always moves to slow when you're trying to waste it. Like condensation on the side of my glass, the seconds beaded and fell---too slow, too painful. In an attempt to find normal, to reorient myself with the world that passed by under my window, I put myself here. I willingly left my apartment---no, my ivory tower. I left it to come here. To find comfort among strangers. But in the velvet walls, in the dark colors splashed on these walls, there was only the false sense of comfort that anyone found in a bar these days. Fear lingered in the beats of the songs: we were all trying to avoid something.

Looking from one man, to the other, to his brother, I wasn't sure if this is what I had in mind for comfort. Their smiles were wide and flashing and their eyes matched. As the one leaned over the bar, I caught myself leaning away and stopped. No. He wasn't looking to be healed, he didn't need anything from me.

I watched their interaction, the familiar bond that kept them in constant competition. I could feel someone nearby, sick and hurting, but I stayed focused on them. Tonight, this wasn't my problem. They could go to the hospital. My power wouldn't be my master.

"I can see that,"

I smiled, sipping from the thin black straw. The drink was crisp, but the fire under the citrus notes gave me hope that there might be relief at the bottom of the glass after all.

"So, what's fun to do in this city?"

Starting over. It seemed like an easier thing to do than to try and force conversation out of their idle attempts at flirting. It gave them a chance to talk, and me a chance to listen. It worked out well for all of us.
