bring me back to life

There it is again, that look of such indifference like he's looking at me through a magnifying glass, like I'm nothing more than an ant on an ant bed that he's studying for the moment because he's bored or something. I hate that look. I try not to let it get under my skin but it's hard. Frost has always had that way about him of doing just that. Maybe I'm still weak in that respect. His brow flicks up when I say that he didn't help me, as if for all the world he still believes that he did. I stand by this one, though. Making me fear what he would do to me didn't make the change. Somehow even though I accused him of it many times, I knew that he wouldn't kill me. Maybe torture me into oblivion, but killing me would be against his greater plan to use me. Maybe that's what kept me shriveled, only giving the minimum to get me out of whatever situation he put me in.

But fearing for my life...that was a new situation for me. I knew by the look in my father's eyes that he would kill me. I knew that if my pack got me cornered, I was dead for sure. So instead of running, I decided to fight back. It was the only thing that got me out. I can only smirk when he says that I'll have to work hard to keep up this new me. "Maybe not as hard as you think." I know he's still pushing, trying to see if I will break if he intimidates me enough. Not anymore. I guess I didn't think that he could see things before they happen. Perhaps a new skill he picked up while I was gone? Even so, the thought hits my mind of what I'm about to do and I will admit, I was surprised. My eyes widen for a split second but it doesn't change my mind. I shoot anyway. Of course it does let me know that he saw it coming so when he doesn't move out of the way, I'm more surprised at that.

His grunt of pain is strangely satisfying to me and yet not enough. He doesn't move his foot either so the arrow I had planned on merely scaring him with goes into his foot. And yet my face hardens. I refuse to feel bad about it. He deserves this pain and more for what he did to me and worse, what he did to Raven. I watch without feeling as he leans against the wall for purchase, another arrow already notched, just in case. At his command to put my bow down, I can't help but laugh and tilt my head. "Are you giving me commands? I don't follow you, remember?" I keep the bow aimed at him, watching with slight amusement as he reaches down to take the arrow from his foot and then the one from his knee. I have to admit, this is a whole different demeanor than what I felt as I watched my father break off the arrow in his stomach. He was still standing by then, and so furious.

I remember I was shaking, tears rolling down my face as I pleaded with him to stop and leave me alone. The memory only stiffens my spine. Those days are over. Never again will I plead. My life is in my hands now and I am in control. My shield is up around me for protection, aware that the coldness in his voice can be put into his magic and sent my way in a heartbeat. He tells me that I get credit but that I'm going to have to do better than that, assuring me that he got stronger. I already got a taste of it when he told me what I was about to do. I'm still curious about that but I'm not about to let on. I'm aware of the way his voice is changing even as he says it and I wonder if he can now heal himself.

I look up too when the couple appears at the end of the alley and his sudden hand movement makes me tense, about to release another arrow when I see the man double over and my mouth gapes in shock and revulsion. When I look back at him, he's straightening up, not a scratch on him, and my eyes narrow, my mouth setting in a thin tight line. The bow disappears from my hands and I march right up to him, only stopping when our faces are mere inches apart. I even remember how he jerked back the last time I was this close, though my gaze is hard as stone. "Maybe next time I'll aim for the head, but you deserve a good taste of your own medicine before I give you such a mercy. We will meet again, Frost. I'll make sure of it."

With that, I walk calmly down the alley toward the couple. As I pass the man, I reach out, my hand lying gently on his shoulder for a moment before I keep walking. Within seconds, the man catches his breath and straightens up, only the blood still on his clothing to prove he was ever hurt as all. I don't even glance back as I walk down the street, ducking into the nearest coffee shop so the couple doesn't try looking for me.
