New Starts. Emmy knew all to well the value of a new start. Her life had been bleak up until now. Growing up in a place that scorned her gifts, she was ordered to control her powers or else. She loved her parents and she wanted so badly to please them. But she had been unable to stop her powers and in the end, it forced her parents to put her into the foster system, to join a program that was advertised to eradicate powers from children. What the ad really meant to say was that the foster family she would be placed with would try to beat it out of her, to break her spirit.

Emmy had lived that life for many years until she was a young teenager. She had fled her foster home in the dead of night, never looking back. She lived and worked the streets, doing whatever she could to put food in her belly. She still tried to suppress her powers, finding that the fear she had only fueled her powers and made them almost uncontrollable. And then came Alex.

Alex had showed her that her powers didn't have to be pushed aside. He taught her how to live with her abilities and slowly, she was learning to control them â€" until one night her abilities took the life of her boyfriend and several others. Which brings us to now â€" it had only been a few weeks since Alex's death and Emmy was here to find his family. They deserved to know that he had been killed, and that he loved them very much.

She had come here by boat and had spent the night in a hotel run by a bunch of weres â€" something she still wasn't quite used to. But she was here and she was learning that this place did not scorn her for her abilities. They only wanted her to learn to control them. It was odd because for so long, she had only suppressed them. Getting used to the idea that she needed to use them to learn to control them was proving difficult. But she was learning â€" she would master her gifts eventually.

Emmy stood in front of one of the many local bars, wondering what it might be like to be able to enjoy a drink. She didn't have money for such luxuries, but she could dream. Eyes looked up to the sky as the moon began to rise high above the city. Soon the creatures would be coming out and she would need to find herself a place to bed down for the night. However, she wanted to test her powers again, to see if she could control it a little bit better.

Standing, Emmy looked up to the sky, raising her arms out to the side with her palm facing up. Her eyes, normally brown in appearance, began to cloud over into a whitish grey appearance. Lightning flashed in her eyes (literally), as she conjured up a winter storm. The wind down the street began to pick up, howling as he searched each crack and crevice. Snow began to fall in droves. She was doing it! But then, the wind knocked over a transformer, sparking wildly and taking out the electricity along this part of town. Fuck.

She sighed as she lowered her arms, her eyes returning to normal. Perhaps she should practice the weather somewhere else besides a crowded city block. Sighing in absolute defeat, Emmy stepped across the street and into the small bar. She pushed open the door and it took her a minute for her eyes to adjust to the blackness. Already people were pulling out their phones for some light while the bartender began to grab some candles from behind the shelves. Emmy eased into a seat before she looked over at the bartender. "There's a down power line about half a block form here. Do you have a landline so we can call and get that fixed?" Emmy didn't have a cell phone or else she would have already called. Damn powers â€" why couldn't she just control them like everyone else.
