North

As the sun sinks below the horizon, I feel a little more free than I did just hours before. At night, a person's vision is rendered weaker and that means you can get away with more, especially if you don't quite look like yourself. Oh, how I've yearned to run on my shorter furred legs and steal something! I haven't had the chance since Tobi and I took out that ice cream vendor and explored the inner contents of his cart. Stealing used to be all I knew but now Raven insists on paying for services. It's almost awkward.

I glance down a dark alley with sharp blue eyes, already turning in that direction to make the shift and start off my night but something shiny catches my eye. I look back down the sidewalk to see a girl with long lean legs and a dress that's entirely too short in my opinion clicking her shiny heels down the sidewalk. She's obviously on the way to somewhere important but her gait is off slightly. She wobbles on every step, reaching out to use the wall of the buildings next to her to steady herself. I tilt my head. Is she sick?

Curious, I stride closer, forgetting my urge to shift in the moment as I investigate this new demeanor. In looks, the girl could be a businesswoman. Her dress is form fitting and I bet it's silky to the touch. Her hair has that stiff appearance of someone who's a little too generous with the hair spray. I've never understood the need for a woman to spend hours in front of a mirror each day. Then again, my life before this consisted of running around as a fox more than half of the time to catch dinner and breakfast and lunch for my pack and then wandering around the camp naked until I can get back to my house for clothes. Some might call it savage and uncivilized, the way I used to live, but it's where I was born and raised. It's all I knew before I ran away and found myself here. When Raven told me I couldn't shift whenever I wanted to, I swear my heart skipped a beat.

I'm slowly getting used to life in a more civilized setting, though paying for things is just one of those customs I will never get used to. I slipped into one of my newer outfits today thanks to Nadya, the flowing dress that stops right at my knees. It's almost form fitting at the top but it's one of those dresses you can spin in and feel pretty. Nadya said it really brings out my eyes though I'm not sure what that means. I wander closer to the girl but she's already turning into a door way. I pause, not sure if I want to follow. I glance behind me and my heart stops. A group of men who are entirely too loud are stumbling toward me, their eyes glowing in that sickly way. My mind made up, I duck into the door way as well and find myself in a rather seedy establishment that I would never have gone into otherwise.

I glance around, blinking as my eyes adjust to the dim lighting. There's people sitting at almost all the tables, enjoying a few drinks and playing cards. A handful more sit around the long counter top, drinking from their own glasses. I see a few women, including the one I followed in here, but they're mostly leaning over shoulders and sitting on laps, giggling in that blatent way. A shudder runs down my spine and I think about escape but when I glance behind me, the group is already turning to come in. Starting to feel trapped, I stride off purposely to the long counter, figuring I have a better chance of putting up a fight there if something happens. There's a gap between most of the patrons and a guy sitting further down the bar so I take advantage of it, scooting onto a stool, closer toward the single man than the group I'd have a harder time getting away from. I let out a sigh of breath I didn't know I was holding and as the bartender wander over, I tilt my head and give her a long look. What'll I have to drink? Who says I have to drink? I blink at her a few times, utterly lost.
