North

Within the Northern vicinity of the city, the wealthy gather behind meticulously trimmed hedges and high-class architecture. The pristine streets are paved with stone and the storefronts are brightly lit and inviting - for the right clientele. In the North, every establishment is eager to cater to the rich and the wealthy. Many such places are used to the sometimes peculiar requests of the otherworldly but here there is little that money cannot buy - whether it happens to be illegal or merely involves looking the other way. Vampires and Dark Hunters are often found upon these Northern streets, their long lives often contributing to their sizable wealth which allows them the luxuries that the North provides.

The bar should be familiar to me, the way the city should. Everything, the velvet details of dark booths were flashing eyes watched everyone who walked through the door, should be something I knew---but it wasn't. In the year that I had slept the memories had slipped, blurred around the eyes of the woman I had saved. So when the man sits next to me, I can't help but wonder if I know him. I watch him out of the corner of my eye. He's all sharp details, all rugged and masculine. When he speaks, it's a low growl against the music and the conversation, against the alcohol that is burning through the anxiety in my system.

My instincts screamed: Bad, danger, death. If this wasn't something that was a common feeling I would feel afraid. If this wasn't the way I felt whenever I walked past someone, I would turn and run without a second thought. But instead I stayed, I tried to stifle a laugh at the thought of a man in a dress. This man, in a dress.

It felt almost normal. Sitting at the bar, drinking, the possibility of flirting with a handsome stranger lingering in the air. Someone drops a glass and I don't move. I want to, I need to---someone might need healing. But the pain of saving the woman flashes through me and I stay where I am an throw my drink back.

"Here, let me," I say to him, leaning towards the bar, arm out like I'm hailing a cab. It grabs the bartender's attention.

"I'll have another, and put whatever he's having on my tab."
