It's not the long walk home that will change this heart, but the welcome I receive after the restart.

The sun is winding down, its orange glow illuminating the dark shutters in Dareios' office in a hazy brown light. He can feel its warmth even from several feet away in the middle of the room. It's a suffocating feeling, as if the sun is sucking all the air out of the room like a vacuum. It's a sensation that's hard to explain to anyone other than a vampire. Dareios knows he can invest in better coverage of the old, stained glass windows in his brownstone to block out of the sun. But he doesn't want to live in a dungeon, though such a place was far more suitable for a creature of his kind. Nevertheless, Dareios deals with it, instinctively retreating to the lower levels of his home at the early morning hours and early evening hours, when the sun's rays were perhaps the strongest and brightest. His cold skin is still crawling, the pesky burning sensation lingering even now as he descends the stairs into the hazy darkness of his basement. Dareios tries not to fixiate on the problems he cannot control (even if he had invested endless amounts of money to somehow, someway, get around the boundaries that define his genetic makeup,) and approach those whom he employs in a more jovial demeanor.

He can hear the chatter of his staff in the workshop. Aaron, his historian, talking with Eric, his restoration carpenter, as they fumble over an ornate chair that dates back to the late 1800s. Now seems as good a time as any to take a break from the back-to-back phone calls with commissioners. So he makes his way into the workshop to greet his staff. Dareios can identify the chair they're discussing upon first glance. It was so similar to one with a burnt orange fabric that his mother had their sitting room when he was a child. But the vampire doesn't interrupt the men. Instead, he hovers at the bottom most step, smiling to himself as he listens to their conversation. Eventually the three chat over a glass of wine, (Dareios' cellar is located on the same floor) but before long, the two men head home to their families.

Dareios is once again left alone with his work, stacks of paperwork and a list of phone calls to make that wait for him in the same room he vacated several hours before. He will continue to avoid it tonight, however, knowing well that the office still has that soul sucking capacity about it, if not only when the sun was out. But more importantly, Dareios has more intriguing plans. Soon the pretty witch, Sorcha, would arrive. Dareios was already dressed in one of his expertly fitted, expensive suits, with his hair meticulously combed and moused in place when he heard a rapt at the door. The lights were cast low inside his home, contributing to a warm but shadowy atmosphere. Perhaps if he had a beating heart, Dareios' would have done a somersault in this moment. The vampire, though charming and handsome, but he had not been on a proper date in some time. He had been fumbling around in his kitchen, toying with the idea of experimenting with a new pasta dish in an effort to impress Sorach with his more human-like abilities, even though a good meal is lost on him. He can't digest it. And was it strange for him to cook for her, even if he couldn't indulge in a meal himself? Clearly he was just a little nervous if he was overthinking it this much.

The vampire opened the heavy, ornate front door to his brownstone and was disappointed to see the three emotionless faces of some of his security team. "Good evening, sir. There is a woman here to meet you. Sorcha Northwoods." One said. Darioes leaned forward at his hips and furrowed his brows in an impatient manner. He was embarrassed of the rigmarole it took to accept guests at his own home with his newfound title. "Yes, of course. Don't keep the woman waiting any longer." He spoke, watching as one of the three men disappeared into the darkness and only the clicking of his heels along the damp asphalt echoed in his wake.

Dareios took this extra minute to smooth down the length of his blazer, which hung expertly from his shoulders in a casual way, and waited for Sorcha to come into view along his entryway.
