East

The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

Ain't life just awful strange

A new world hangs outside the window
Beautiful and strange
It must be I've fallen awake
I must be

There was something in the way Sebastian touched that girl. The sinister glare behind his eye as he forced himself over her that just made Buffy's blood boil. Watching him lick his tongue over the holes he left in the side of her neck made her squirm internally. All Buffy wanted to do was slam his head into the side of the brick wall he so nonchalantly leaned against, until his skull became nothing more than a wet pile of mush. Her anger was irrational and insane. She knew this. It had the power to wallow her up and relinquish a side of herself she didn't like. She felt broken inside because of it. But the violence and the lashing out was the coping mechanism that seemed to stick. Therapy helped. But slaying as many vampires as possible is what took the edge off.

There was a vampire in her life once. It was early in her dark hunter career, when she still felt squeamish about murder, be it a supernatural or a human or a bug. The night she met him wasn't all that different from this one. She had followed him into a nightclub and then out into an alley. She watched him feed on a human girl and then brutally murder her, and when it came time to end him, she froze.

It didn't take long for Buffy to feel at ease in his company. Buffy had been so naive. She knew some vampires possessed the ability of affinity manipulation, but when it was turned against her, her logic and strength had been rendered useless. Buffy transformed into Jason's puppet, a dote that undressed for him, that killed for him at his will, that became his walking food bank. Internally, she was in complete distress. She struggled to find the strength to break free from his control. At one point, she even tried to kill herself. Her attempt, of course, was blocked by him.

Eventually the dark hunter hit her breaking point. She woke one morning determined to end the slavery in which she was living under. And she killed him in his sleep.

But she couldn't get the year of her life back that she'd spent in his captivity. Nor could she erase the memories of what she had done.

No one close to her knew much about it. Leslie knew enough that something had gone terribly awry. She had met him on several occasions and knew him only as Gia's boyfriend, never as a manipulative and controlling vampire.

Buffy missed out on so much time with their mother. By the time her true self resurfaced, her mother was deathly ill. All she could do then was take care of her until she took her last breathe. Then Leslie went off to school. So Buffy poured herself into her work in an effort to get back into the good graces of the Council. She rented out her childhood home because she couldn't stand living there alone, and moved into a shitty efficiency apartment in the back yard.

She vowed to never get close to another vampire again.

When she last saw Sebastian, she felt that creeping sensation she'd felt with Jason. She could feel him trying to take over, to bend her will into desiring him. It's what led her to make a noisy scene at the speed dating event, and turned her into a weak, anxious mess. She let Sebastian go that time. Not because she liked the guy, but because she was emotionally incapable of handling anything in that moment. He was lucky to have been spared that once. Never twice.

Buffy stood silently and stiffly as she watched the girl wander back into the nightclub. Her lips were pulled tight into a scowl. Her heart was beating furiously in her ears.

I don't need your fucking help." She spat, as she watched the vampire's eyes drift from the blood dripping from her palm and back to her face. She didn't wince as she tightened her fist. Buffy ignored his quips about her appearance, but when he talked about the girl, she could feel her blood boiling again. "You know how many times I've heard that before?"

A scurry in the putrid trashcans behind them made her momentarily look away from the vampire. A heavy-set man who looked like a bouncer peered out the door and spotted them. Then he shouted: "Hey! Get the fuck out of here. I'm calling the cops."

Buffy closed her eyes for a long moment and released her grip on the stake at her back. She rolled her head across her shoulders and sighed deeply, opening her eyes again only to see that the vampire was still here. "You heard the man. Get the fuck out of here asshole. Unless you still want to play."
