East

The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

At my question, he chooses his words carefully, telling me Barista means someone who makes coffee. I scrunch up my nose a little, wondering if I can actually learn how to make the stuff that smells so good. He then tells me what I would be called and that it means bar maid. My eyes widen at this new source of knowledge and I think to the movies and such I've seen on tv at Raven's house. I gasp a little in surprise.

"Does that mean I have to wear that short outfit with the white apron?"

My cheeks flush awkwardly as I think to the shows of women in short skimpy black dresses, dusting stuff with this weird feathery thing and bending over in front of the men, practically seducing them with their legs. I tremble at the very thought of having to do that in front of so many people. If I don't wear it, does that mean I can't have the job?

I'm brought back to reality though at the touch of his hand on my chin. My natural reaction is to shrink back as if hit, but I find myself jerking a little but I don't pull away as I once would, my eyes finding his and feeling myself soothed by the quiet determination I find there. His words make my lips tremble a little as I bite my bottom lip to hold back the flood of emotions. I nod with a whisper.

"Thank you."

It's all I can think to say. When I mention my clumsiness, he onlys says nonsense to which my lips twitch a little in a shy smile, happily taking the candy bar he hands to me as I shrug.

"It's true. I bet I can't make it across the cafe without spilling something."

I duck my head sheepishly. He returns to cooking and I return to watching, my eyes lit up with intrigue as he moves the melting chocolate around the pan. I nibble on the chocolate a little more, smiling when he agrees that it's good. My smile only widens when he says that he can show me that plant sometime, or at least that he can see what he can do about it which is as good a promise to show me as anything. I stay where I am as he goes to get cups and I take mine with a shy smile, watching as he pours the liquid in. I give him a more sincere smile as he grins, the gesture contagious as I lift the mug to my lips.

"OH!"

I exclaim the minute the chocolate touches my lips. I set it down quickly, bringing my hands to my lips. My eyes have unshed tears in them as I try to hide the pain and shock.

"It's hot."

I whisper through my fingers.
