East

The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

The night had been longer than I was used to, and I had seen a lot of long nights. It wasn't seriously out of the ordinary, either. I'd had a few meetings to uphold with customers, but that was it. They had purchased and paid like regular customers, leaving my wallet thicker than when I'd set out to walk through the warehouse district earlier that night. There was always a mundane lack of conversation, bruised with a brief feeling of loneliness that ebbed away with sunrise. I hadn't even felt compelled to go home, unfortunately for my cat, but somehow I needed to be outside and away from walls that felt more confining than usual. I was, also unfortunately, still wearing the clothes I'd had on from last night and they were absolutely inappropriate for work.

I guess that means I'm not going.

Even if I was, there was a fuck-ton of caffeine I was going to need to get me through the day. Inner Sanctum was the closest option, considering I'd made it downtown sometime in the night. My feet hurt, and when I saw the bench just outside they were begging me to sit myself down, regardless of the rain that was covering it. I was a little soggy myself, which made the cigarette so much harder to light. I was almost hoarse from the handful I'd smoked on the walk here, trying to keep myself awake. What a fucking wash.

I guess a sad soul is always up past midnight.

I slipped inside the coffee shop, thanking God for the low lighting that was probably convenient for anyone who had a hangover. I almost felt like I did, but a different kind of hangover. Y'know, the ones that surface from moods that you can't shake. Emotional hangover, I guess. The line was short thankfully, and I slipped my pack of cigarettes into my back pocket while I wandered towards the bar.

"Whatever is your biggest size coffee with as many shots of espresso you can fit, yeah?" The accent was a lot thicker than usual, mixed with the hoarseness of the amount of tobacco that had ripped my throat the night before. I almost didn't understand myself, but hoped the barista had watched Blood Diamond or something that people often likened my accent to. I felt myself slump my shoulder against the bar that was close by, silently berating myself for the obvious lack of sleep while silently praying that the espresso would work magic.
