East

The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

Ain't life just awful strange

A new world hangs outside the window
Beautiful and strange
It must be I've fallen awake
I must be

The sun is setting behind the flimsy white curtains that drift idly over the window sill. The sun is bright and warm behind them, casting the fabric in a rich orange glow. The sun's last rays of the day reach the crumpled duvet comforter bunched over her thin and creaky bed. Only Buffy's toes, and the tail of her tabby cat, can be seen protruding from the bottom edge of the covers. The day is ending, and Buffy is still in bed. Underneath her sheets the feline is purring and nestled into a ball in between Buffy's legs. A worn copy of All My Puny Sorrows lay open on a pillow next to her. But Buffy's eyes are closed. Her breathing is soft and even. She is asleep.

Slumber has never come easily for the dark hunter, even when she was human. It was a constant struggle. She slept in deep fits, 20 minutes or so being knocked out cold, only to rise shortly thereafter in an anxious fit. No matter the therapy appointments, the doctor and self prescribed drugs, the home remedies, leaving the lights on, this was just the way it was. Buffy would forever be tired. As long as she was alive, her mind would never let her rest.

She woke quietly this time, her mouth held loose and open as she began to come around. The cat slapped a paw against her foot at the first sign of movement. The thin girl yawned and curled her leggy frame into a ball, petting the cat as it moved to find refuge on her pillow. Buffy grasped at the covers, pulling them tightly around her body. The glow at her window was long gone. Her room had gone dark and cold. She reached for her phone almost involuntarily, scrolling through spam emails until she found one from the council, in which she read with interest.

Business had been slow as of late. Buffy wasn't sure if that was because she sort of went rouge and killed that nearly-dead vampire in the alleyway left behind by Arlo, or if just generally, it was a slow time of year. Nevertheless, she was eager to get going on this new assignment. It was another vampire, a flashy one she couldn't help but think looked a little like Justin Bieber.

Before hauling her half-naked frame out of bed, Buffy begrudgingly looked at her text messages. There were a half dozen from only one person. Leslie.

Leslie: "Listen, I'm sorry. I just want you to know I love you and I want you to be happy. That's the only reason why I bug you so much."

Buffy allowed one hand to rest over her eyes for a moment as she mentally prepared herself to reply.

Leslie: "Hello? Wtf."

The last message read.

Gia: "I know, I'm sorry too. Don't worry about me. I'm actually going to a nightclub with friends tonight."

Buffy gritted her teeth as she pressed send. She didn't particularly enjoy lying to her sister, but this was just a small one. Technically, yes, she was going to a nightclub. Just not with friends. Buffy could appreciate what her younger sister was trying to do. It had been a rough couple of years with mom's death and then Leslie skipping town on a volleyball scholarship for school. Buffy just didn't really have anything to do anymore. She was so used to taking care of everyone. It felt a little like part of her died, too, when her family left her. This was merely Leslie's attempt to get her rough-around-the-edges older sister out of her shitty apartment, and to spend some quality time with real humans. Not just the supernatural ones she liked to stake after midnight. But that was exactly what she planned to do tonight.

Buffy got ready with minimal effort. She put a bra on and wore her lowest cut T-shirt. She pulled a worn denim jacket over it, with her usual boots and skinny jeans. She did, however, add some dark eye makeup and red lipstick. She was going to a nightclub after all, and she couldn't afford for the bouncer to not let her in.

She slipped into the club with relative ease. Buffy had never tried to be pretty enough to generate much attention, and thus, she was easily passed over in a crowd of more loudly-dressed women. She ordered a vodka soda from the bar and tried not to hover too much in the corner. Eventually she made a lap around the club, and then another one. She couldn't find the vampire she was looking for, even though he had tweeted just an hour ago that he planned to be here tonight. Frustrated, the dark hunter ordered another drink at the bar. As she knocked it back in almost one gulp, she recognized another man further down the bar, another vampire no less, with a woman at his hip.

The hairs on the back of her neck stood in protest as she realized she knew him. Sebastian, that vampire from St. Patrick's Day. The one who had witnessed her panic attack and had awkwardly tried to help her in the street when she abandoned the bar. Buffy's hands clenched into fists as her gut tightened. She hated not being in control. She hated it even more when someone else witnessed her losing control. And he was a vampire, of all things. She had wholeheartedly planned on staking him that night, until her anxiety got the best of her.

She tried her best not to care that he was here. It was a busy club. It shouldn't be that hard to go undetected. But she kept finding her gaze drifting back to him. A warmth rose through her chest and splintered across her body as she noticed the woman become more and more interested in him. She seemed so flighty at first, unsure and uncomfortable, but within a matter of minutes, he had her right where he wanted her.

Buffy ordered another drink and tried to tamper down her emotions, which were running rampant on the inside. Her eyes were glued to them as they stepped away from the bar and moved to the exit. Buffy was so angry in the wake of their departure her hand crushed the empty glass between her fingers, slicing open her palm along the way. She completely forgot about the Bieber look-a-like she was supposed to be tailing, and went out the same door Sebastian had with that woman.

By the time the door flung open, Sebastian was standing there, his lips and hands at her neck. "What the fuck, dude!" She growled, the anger coating her cheeks in a hue so red it matched her blotchy lipstick. Blood dripped from her clenched fist, running dribbles of crimson down her fingers. Her uninjured hand was tucked behind her back, grasping at a stake she had in the waist of her jeans. "Let her go, now."
