East

The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

Don't fret precious, I'm here

The dinner was quickly a bore. Business talk always made my mouth dry, like it was sucking the life out of me by every swallow of the food that was far more expensive than it tasted. I should have been more intruiged by the fairly impressive selection of entrees on the menus that had been sitting in front of all of us. I should have been more interested in the way the wine was smooth as it hit the back of my throat after a toast that meant nothing from a man who's opinions were about to be null. I should have been, but I so wasn't.

Instead, I was paying more attention to the smile that touched Serafina's lips when she replied to me, commenting that she certainly did hope the pleasure was all mine. The way her lips curled around her words was almost arousing enough, let alone the mischevious, impish smile that tugged her lips. I felt my own lips mirror a similar smile, and my gaze lazily turn away from the steely gaze of the woman beside me. With a sigh, I took another sip of wine to try and rid myself of the cottony feeling that had taken over my mouth. It was disgusting; just as dry as the look on the man's face across from me.

Thomas drank his wine slowly, slowly lifting his fork to his mouth while he ate his salad.

Conversation was, on one level, amusing. The men I worked with weren't all as dull as they seemed, once you peeled away the layers of skin. Some figuratively, some literally. Like onion peeling, these business men held small secrets between layers. Some had mistresses that occasionally frequented these meetings alongside their shady counter parts. A handful of the men had private contracts with me, requiring specialized skills that the other half didn't even know existed. The layers of the onions sitting around the table with me were so transparent, easy to read for me like the menu that had been sitting on the table in front of all of us. I could only wonder if they were as transparent to Serafina, who seemed to fall recluse to herself, beneath whatever her own exterior layer was. The stillness beside me was loud enough that I could believe she saw through them, too.

That train didn't get very far, because dinner had arrived and I couldn't help but feel a Cheshire grin touching my face. The oysters were arranged artfully on a tray that was sat in front of Serafina. They didn't' look appetizing in the least, but the symbolism and humor behind them was all I needed to divert my attention from the conversation that didn't even lull when the food arrived.

"I am going to go out on a limb and say you don't know how to eat them properly," I started to say, working my way into the first oyster, to show her the proper way of eating them without obtaining a major urge to vomit the salty, thick liquid that often accompanied an oyster. Funny. The knife felt familiar in my hand, sliding the serrated edge between the shell's lips. I did it slowly, languidly, and once it was severed open, I brought the oyster to my lips and tossed my head back slowly. It was a trained motion; I'd eaten oysters forever and watched my sisters do it when it was the only food we could afford because all we had to do was know how to swim. I licked my lips, raising my gaze to her.

" Your turn."

I was a little uncomfortable to admit that I was more than alright with watching her swallowing oysters than paying attention to the man I was supposed to kill. But hey, the fucker was far more interested in his own food and drink than the tasks at hand. In order to get a prime view, I leaned back with my glass of wine in my hand, Cheshire smile having grown into something a little darker.
