East

The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

It's not the long walk home that will change this heart, but the welcome I receive after the restart.

Dareios sat solemnly in the ornate, blood red chair in the corner of his dimly lit bedroom. The thick, dark curtains were drawn, sparing the vampire from the pesky rays of a typical spring afternoon in Sacrosanct. He was bored, awake and alert at an off hour, but confined to the darkness of his lavish brownstone in Anacosta Heights, at least for a few more hours. His slender wrist cocks to the left so he can read the time again. The gentle tick of its hands had cycled maybe once, twice, since he'd checked the last time. A half-smoked cigar sputters out in the ash tray next to him.

It had only been two weeks since the vampire announced his bid to run as mayor of this city. But the news cycles were relentless. His campaign manager warned him this would happen, but alas, in all the years Dareios had walked this earth, he could never have been prepared for what happened in the wake of his announcement. There was true grit and a promise of transparency in his message and in his decision to run as not human, but vampire. His name already garnered the attention of so many in this community due to his wealth and charity work. So many had encouraged him to run. But their words of support fell onto deaf ears now that he was openly talking about being a vampire, and the underlying supernatural community that dwelled here.

The phone near the bed rings and Dareious hesitates. The bell chimes again, and again, and again before he stands and strides across the room to answer it. He listens for some time. "Yes, I'll see you in an hour, then." He speaks quietly and hangs up the phone. The time continues to pass at a crawl, but he takes his time to change into one of his many well-fitted suits, a black jacket and vest with a blood red tie and carnation in the pocket, freshly pressed by his staff that morning.

As the sun begins to set, Dareios is freed from the confines of his stuffy bedroom. But the rest of the house is quiet. Aaron and his antique staff were already gone for the day. Business had seen a momentary uptick in sales after his political announcement, but it seemed as though that drive was beginning to slow down. His wait staff had left several bags of mammal blood for him to feed before the fundraising gala tonight. It was part of the vampire 'image' he and his marketing staff were trying to control. There was nothing friendly about watching a vampire drink blood in a crowd of rich humans.

In his pocket was the shiny, heavy amulet, a piece he hadn't shared with his staff downstairs. In fact, he'd told no one about his misadventure to find it -- especially not about the close call he'd had with the dark hunter in the suburbs. For whatever reason, Dareios was drawn to what he'd deemed to be an otherwise useless piece of jewelry. He couldn't understand why Frost was so interested in it. But Dareios had managed to hang on to it for weeks now, skirting the werehorse's calls and inquiries. He had to make sure it was harmless before he'd just give it away.

Dareios smooths the edges of his well manicured dark locks atop his head from inside the tinted limousine. Members of his staff ramble off talking points and people of interest all the while their stares never leave that of the glowing screens of their ipads. Tonight Dareios was to charm every man, woman, vampire, whoever showed up to his gala tonight at Red on the Water. This venue was chosen on purpose of course. Not only was it historic and quaint, but it was owned by another well-to-do vampire, of whom Dareios hoped to align himself to, if only for tonight.
