East

The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

It's easy to spot hunters out on the street. They have that look about them, the one that says they're looking for trouble and not afraid to start it. They usually carry a lot of weapons and they're not afraid to show one or two. I wasn't thinking about such things on a day like today though. It's pouring down and all I can think about is getting shelter. I know I could shift and race home but something about the empty house is foreboding in weather like this. You can only sit in front of the fireplace and read for so long before you want to get out into the world.

I step into the warmth of the cafe with a grateful expression. My hair is soaked but I doubt the guy at the door will mind. The rain is blocking my smell but all I care about smelling right now is some good hot chocolate. I only notice the guy when he starts moving. I was too caught up in seeking shelter to really look around when I first came in. I look up when there's movement and I see him set down his coffee and get up, walking toward me. I try to tell him it's no trouble, hugging my arms a little tighter around myself because there's something about the way he's looking at me. He tries to look friendly, the corners of his lips twitching as he leans against the booth across from me. He's acting harmless but I can't shake the feeling that something's off.

He insists that it's no trouble, asking if anything catches my eyes. I offer a shy smile as I nod.

"Can I trouble you for a hot chocolate and glazed donut then?"

When lightening lights up the sky, I jump a little, a short gasp in my throat as I press back against the booth and try to focus on breathing. The lights in the cafe flicker and I look up, eyes wide like saucers. Will we be left in darkness? I hear his small whisper and I swallow. About then, the door shudders from a gust of wind and a small breeze shifts through the cafe, just enough for me to get a whiff I was not expecting. Within seconds, I'm jumping out of the booth and back peddling away from him. I stop a few feet away, my body shuddering.

"You...you're a hunter."
