East

The east side of the city is the very heart of Sacrosanct - it's unique skyline is a clash between modern sky rises and small Victorian-inspired storefronts. In the heart of downtown, the sleek colored glass buildings reign supreme though their old-world roots can be seen in the most peculiar places from the lamp post styled electric street light to the stone sidewalks. The old world architecture slowly returns the further from downtown you travel, however. It's here that magic thrives, it hums in every stone and can be felt in every breath. Often, newcomers to the city may become overwhelmed by such sensations but, eventually, it becomes an ever-present feeling that's hardly noticed.

I know that Alexander must be pretty old. Not that he looks it or anything. More because he has this distant way of looking sometimes, like someone who has "been there, done that" kind of thing. He seems to have some wisdom too, like someone with a lot of experience. I bet he knows a lot about my kind but I probably don't want to know how most of those encounters ended. I wonder if he wasn't always this lenient with how he treated other supernaturals. He seems to have such discipline, like he's used to both giving orders and recieving them so I'm betting at one time, he was the best hunter the Council had. I wonder how many legendary people he met in his life time, how many figures in out American history he has touched, shook their hand, or talked to them. It's exciting to think about.

I am nervous about my job because I've never been taught to handle money. I don't know how to count. If it wasn't for Raven, I wouldn't know how to read. He does tell me that eventually I will have to count and my eyes widen a little in open fear but at least he doesn't say that it's required and I can't have the job if I can't do it. That would be terrible. He takes a seat on the bench next to me and I can't help but squirm a bit closer, wanting to feel his body heat so I know I'm safe. Even in the middle of the day, I still feel paranoid most days after my last encounter with Frost and Raven. He listens patiently to my stories and seems content as we waste the day away. But alas the day has to end and we say our farewells before I reluctantly head to the forest to get some sleep. I curl up in the den I made for myself after shifting, sighing heavily as I fall asleep, thinking about Alexander and how I hope to know him better in time.

But the next morning is a day of excitement and nerves. It's my first day of work. I shift and find good clothes to throw on, hurrying to the cafe and hoping Alexander will already be there. Of course he lives there so he should be. My mouth gapes open when I see how busy the place is even from the outside. People are milling around outside the doors and inside, talking and making orders and drinking from steaming mugs. The atmosphere is both content and chaotic because I know I'm about to walk into the middle of it. I cringe and have to fight the urge to run away, knowing I can't let Alexander down. And so I square my shoulders and take a deep breath before gently shouldering my way through the crowd and into the cafe. He calls out to me th minute I get inside and my face lights up with a smile when I see him. I hurry over to him, feeling better already about everything.

"Morning" I say softly as I reach the counter. At his gesture, I move behind the counter with relief, glad to have something between me and the growing crowd of customers. I am amazed by how skilled he is, noting that I have his attention while he also takes notes on orders and makes drinks for people like it's nothing. When a woman grows agitated, he repeats her order back perfectly and I can see the admiration in her eyes as well. My smile only grows to know I'll get to learn from him. At his question, I nod humbly, having taught myself to write as I was reading so I would learn how to write for myself some day. I've been keeping a journal if only to keep my skills growing.
